Sierra Vista PD Brings Swift Close to Social Media Threats

CAS, Center for Academic Success, Sierra Vista AZOn Sunday, April 26th a sixteen year old male anonymously posted a message on social which included a threat of violence against Sierra Vista schools and the mall. The Sierra Vista Police Department as well as the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office immediately began investigating the threat and had apprehended the juvenile who allegedly posted the threats by approximately 8:30 Sunday evening. The threats are now considered to be a hoax with no credible evidence of planned attacks or accomplices coming to light.

In an official press release Sunday evening Sheriff Dannels stated, “the hard work and dedicated effort by both the Sierra Vista PD and Sheriff’s Office staff in this incident confirms that shared intelligence in a streamlined and collaborated effort brings greater efficiency to any criminal investigation. It is also with the invaluable input from the public that we were able to bring swift closure in such a serious incident. Our deepest appreciation to all of those who contributed to this success.”

In an exercise of an abundance of caution, local police also provided extra security at all Sierra Vista schools on Monday morning. CAS had a uniformed officer patrolling the campus and interacting with classes throughout the school day and into after care on Monday. Increased police presence will occur throughout the remainder of the week as the police continue their investigations.

By Monday April 27th at 12:30, law enforcement officials had confirmed that the 16-year-old acted alone with his hoax threats. However, many students and parents had elected not to attend school on Monday. CAS saw about a 25% absenteeism rate, significantly higher than other school days.

CAS treats these threats very seriously, and the safety of our students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance. Further, CAS would like to thank the Sierra Vista police for its swift actions and constant communication bringing this emotional issue to a close.

CAS Celebrates Fall with Learning and Fun

harvest festWith the changing of the seasons and holidays approaching, the Center for Academic Success has no shortage of special learning opportunities and fall celebrations. Our first graders in both classes studied the change of seasons and its impact on foliage and native plants. Later, classes had a video chat with a first grade class in Dallas, Texas to compare and contrast the seasons in different climates. Students were excited to meet new friends and explore differing holiday traditions across the country.

Additionally, fourth graders finalized their presentations of Native American tribes, their cultures, and their histories in an oral presentation and dwelling diorama. The classes honored the Native American contributions to our United States democracy while learning about historical native constitutions and inter-tribal contracts. Students even studied and sampled indigenous foods. thanksgiving turkey

Students have also decorated the hallway commemorating the things for which they are thankful this year. Middle school teacher, Ms. Tacey, organized a turkey with thankful feathers to give students and staff an opportunity to reflect on items in their lives for which they are thankful. Also, the entire k-8 staff had a huge Harvest Festival celebration in After CARE in which students had faces painted, played games, stuffed scarecrows (see picture above) and created thankful murals.

Please note, CAS will be closed Thursday, November 27th and Friday, November 28th in recognition of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Please enjoy your time with your families and travel safely. Classes will resume Monday, December 1st.
