High School Science Teacher, Ms. Doran, and 2nd Grade Teacher, Ms. Engols, have put their heads together to create a special Friday program called STEAM Up! for 2nd graders who have completed all of their work for the week. The name of the program is a play on the acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math” used in the education field. These 2nd graders are invited to the High School’s science classroom, where Ms. Doran and her high school student volunteers have a new science adventure ready every week.
The students listen as Ms. Doran tells them about a new scientific mission and the project that they must accomplish in order to complete the mission. For example, if the students are on a mission to Mars to learn about the planet, they will need to construct rocket ships in order to get there (paper towel roll and tin foil rocket ships, that is)! Another adventure might involve an Arctic expedition to study “core samples” and learn about polarity and the age of the Earth. STEAM Up! takes science and art and creatively blends them together for a fun twist on learning.
CAS is excitedly planning for back to school as we prepare to welcome one of our largest ever enrollments for the 2014-15 school year. We’ve started off the summer right with fun back to school events at the local mall and at Fort Huachuca. Parents — please remember CAS supplies all required school items. Students grades K-5 may carry a backpack. Older students may carry a zip binder.
For all our families, our open house will be held Monday, August 4th from 2-6pm. This is a fun time to meet your teachers, see the classrooms, and get students ready for the new year. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to attend as class schedules, After CARE enrollment, and Parent Portal enrollment will be available.
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 6th. We can’t wait to see everyone again and start our best year ever.
